Helldivers 2 Medals are the real progression engine, earned from missions and loot, spent in Warbonds for top weapons, armor, stratagems and cosmetics, so you scale fast on tougher ops.
Medals are the real progress bar in Helldivers 2. Requisition's great for calling in toys, sure, but Medals are what actually change how your diver plays from one night to the next. You feel it the moment a Warbond page asks for "just a few more" and you realise you're basically paying for power, not just cosmetics. If you're the kind of player who likes to plan upgrades or you're looking to buy game currency or items in U4GM, it helps to understand where those Medals go and why they vanish so fast.
Spend Like You'll Regret It
Warbonds look friendly at first. Page one is cheap, you grab a grenade, a cape, maybe a booster, and you think you're cruising. Then the later pages hit and the prices climb hard, and finishing a whole Warbond can chew through well over 2,000 Medals without you even noticing. So yeah, don't impulse-buy the shiny stuff early. I tell mates to pick one or two "workhorse" unlocks first: a weapon that clears crowds when everything's gone loud, and armour perks that save you from mistakes. Fashion's fun, but it doesn't stop a Charger, and it won't keep you standing when the squad's out of reinforcements.
Where The Medals Actually Come From
If you stay on the easy difficulties, you'll get Medals, but it's slow. You'll feel like you're jogging on a treadmill. The game's generous when you take risks: Hard and up is where the rewards start to look like something, and Suicide Mission or Helldive can stack them quickly if your team's steady. The bigger deal, though, is finishing the operation chain. People bail after one mission because it got messy, and that's where you lose the real bonus. Stick it out. Even if the middle map is rough, the operation payout makes it worth the stress.
Don't Skip The Map
A lot of Medals aren't tied to "winning" at all. They're just sitting out there. The blinking beacons, side objectives, those bunkers that need two people—go poke them. It takes a minute, and sometimes it's nothing, but often it's a tidy chunk of Medals that the whole squad gets instantly. And that's the best part: you don't have to extract to keep the pickup, so grabbing them early is basically free value. In public lobbies, I'll usually type a quick "bunker here" and wait; most players will jog over once they realise it's loot for everyone.
That Annoying 250 Medal Ceiling
The cap is real, and it's brutal. You can only hold 250 Medals, so big payouts can get wasted if you're sitting near the limit. Check your total before you queue up, especially if a Major Order just landed or you've been farming. If you're around 240, spend something. Anything. It's better to own a random helmet you'll never equip than to watch rewards evaporate. If you're short on time and still want to keep your account moving, some players also look into quicker progression options like Helldivers 2 Boosting while they save their own sessions for the missions they actually enjoy.
